Description including Unit Aims
Students are taught the fundamentals of veterinary practice management including the management of human resources, health and safety, administrative and financial systems and computer systems. Three one-week rotations spent working alongside practice managers will enable students to consolidate and apply theoretical knowledge gained through the completion of a practical portfolio of set tasks.
Aims:
- To build a knowledge and understanding of managing health and safety within a clinical environment
- To build a knowledge and understanding of financial decision-making to increase practice profitability
- To develop an understanding of the role of marketing in increasing client loyalty
- To develop critical analysis skills through the evaluation of real-life scenarios and case studies drawn from day-to-day practice
- To develop independence in decision-making and the selection of appropriate approaches to problem-solving.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Explain the principles of H&S management and the management of systems and procedures to ensure business safety, efficiency and profitability
- Apply a range of marketing tools and techniques to increase practice profitability and improve practice-client relationships
- Gain some practical experience of veterinary practice administration
- Tackle a range of management case studies by selecting and applying appropriate strategies
Teaching Information
- 42 x 50 min lectures (35 hours)
- 4 x 50 min study day sessions (to work on case studies)
- 3 wk practical rotation working alongside administrative staff (105 hours)
- Online scenarios and wikis in Blackboard (10 hours)
- Private study (30 hours)
Assessment Information
The overall pass mark for this unit is 40%
Students must obtain a minimum of 40% in each of the following areas:
2-hr written examination 100%
