This unit is designed to allow students to undertake independent research within a taught framework, and to produce either one extended, or two long, essays on an area or areas of particular interest. The unit will combine taught seminars with one-to-one meetings with an adviser.
Aims:
This unit aims to allow students to move towards a greater degree of independence in their studies, and to write an extended essay or two long essays on an area or areas of particular interest. The unit will aim to allow a student to develop their research, writing, and critical reading skills. There will be a particular emphasis in seminars on ways of thinking both about and through literature as (in itself) a mode of thought.
The student will have had an opportunity to participate in structured seminars designed to support a project of independent study. This mode of work should normally allow a student to develop their research, writing, and critical reading skills in depth and their confidence in working independently.
This unit will be taught in five three-hour seminars, combining a range of teaching methods including student presentations, seminar discussion and small group work. In addition, students will be allocated up to a maximum of two hours consultation time with an adviser.
The unit will be assessed through submission of one extended essay (6,500 8,000 words) or two long essays totalling the same number of words (no fewer than 3,000 words per essay) submitted together (for which one mark would be awarded), on a subject or subjects of the students choice, as agreed with the Unit Director.
Key reading and references will vary depending on the choice of topic.
