This unit is the theoretical underpinning for the degree programme, and as such it runs in two parts as a double core unit with theories of management learning two in the second year of the programme. It introduces students to the main influential thinkers on management learning including Chris Argyris, Donald Schon, Edgar Schein, and the Sheffield School including Revans, Megginson, and the Bath School including Reason, Rowan and Heron. It is based on the important distinction between planned and emergent conceptions of management learning. It will also consider barriers to learning, drawing on psychoanalytic theory. Finally, it introduces students to the use of metaphors and narrative in organisational learning. The aim of the module is to encourage students from the beginning of the programme to be critical of much of the popular work on self-development, and to take a reflexive stance on their own experience.
