Description including Unit Aims

A thorough examination in weekly classes of some of the major works of Tolstoy, including the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and a selection of short stories, with due reference to historical and social background, thematic concerns of the novelist, and questions of form.

Intended Learning Outcomes

To develop students’ understanding of selected major novels and short prose of Tolstoy and the historical, social, and intellectual context in which he was writing, and thus of Tolstoy’s place in Russian literary and intellectual history. Students will gain a detailed knowledge of two of Tolstoy’s novels and key short prose of his early and late career. They will be able to identify and discuss the salient thematic concerns of Tolstoy’s work. They will be aware of the outstanding formal features of his prose and the relationship of these to the thematic content

Teaching Information

1 weekly lecture hour and 1 weekly seminar hours.

Assessment Information

One 2000-word essay plus 2-hour exam (50% / 50%)
