Description including Unit Aims

To enable students to integrate and apply knowledge of engineering theory and detailed design to the conceptual design of civil engineering projects using systems thinking approaches. The unit will be based around projects taken from a variety of civil engineering areas, drawing on actual projects ongoing in the Bristol area where possible (with the support of local practitioners).

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, successful students will be:

  • aware of the systems perspective in civil engineering design and apply this concept to develop viable engineering solutions
  • able to describe the principles and fundamental issues involved in the conceptual design of typical civil engineering problems such as building structures, traffic networks, water and sewerage systems, geotechnical structures etc;
  • able to undertake the design of broad civil engineering projects and apply knowledge and skills to the formulation and selection of viable conceptual designs.
