Unit Information

Why is this unit important?

In this unit you will carry out the research plan you developed as part of the Anatomical Research Preparation Unit, collecting data which will add something new to the field of anatomy! You will focus on practical data collection, through laboratory work, digital measurements, archive visits or collecting data from the corpus of the literature.

How does this fit into you programme of study?

You will build on all of the skills developed and hard work you have put in throughout your degree programme to finish the unit with a draft manuscript, ready for peer review.

Your learning on this unit

An overview of content

In this unit you will conduct independent research with a data output which is new to the field of anatomy. This may be lab or archive based, involve digital practical work, or use data from the corpus of the research literature.

Discussion with your research supervisor and your participation in the Anatomical Research Preparation Unit will determine the precise nature of the research activities you undertake in this unit.

How will students, personally, be different as a result of the unit

At the end of this unit you will be confident in your abilities to carry out independent data collection and translate original research results into authentic scientific communications.

Learning outcomes

  1. Complete an independent anatomical research project with a valid data output
  2. Develop research skills in data collection, analysis and evaluation of results within the wider field of anatomy
  3. Communicate scientifically in a variety of forms

How you will learn

You will learn by doing research with guidance from an experienced research supervisor, as well as bespoke writing support from unit staff.

How you will be assessed

Formative:

During your research period you will complete a Mid-Point Interview to explain your research to a research supervisor who is not your own.

Summative:

A research paper structured appropriately for publication (80%) (ILOs 1-3)

Oral or poster presentation at an internal conference day (20%) (ILOs 1-3)

When assessment does not go to plan:

Opportunity to submit a revised research paper and an alternative presentation opportunity.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. ANATM0004).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the University Workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The assessment methods listed in this unit specification are designed to enable students to demonstrate the named learning outcomes (LOs). Where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, schools will make reasonable adjustments to support a student to demonstrate the LO by an alternative method or with additional resources.

The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
