Unit Information

The unit seeks to provide an introduction to the major concepts, theories and ideologies that have shaped social policy and perspectives on welfare and welfare states. It also introduces a range of theoretical perspectives that provide a critique of the welfare state and, or an alternative vision of welfare society. It sets these perspectives within their socio-economic, political and historical contexts to illustrate their relevance to and impact upon policy making and welfare provision.

The unit is organised into three main parts. The first part introduces key social policy concepts, such as needs, risk, equality and the mixed economy of welfare, equality and risk. The second part focuses on the core ideologies of welfare, i.e., Conservatism, Liberalism and Socialism, and their most influential off-shoots including Social Democracy and Neo-Liberalism. The third part turns to examine key critical perspectives on welfare state and social policy with a particular focus on Marxist, feminist and post-modernist thinking.

This is a first-year mandatory unit that introduces the core concepts, theories and ideologies that are of relevance to SP students on all pathways throughout their degree.

Your learning on this unit

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. Use established theories and concepts of social policy to analyse how social needs, social problems and policies themselves are constructed and understood
  2. Distinguish among, and critically evaluate, different theoretical, conceptual normative, moral and political approaches to social policy issues

How you will learn

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities involving weekly lectures, small group discussions and self-directed exercises.

How you will be assessed

Learning Journal (3000 words, 100%)

There will be a maximum of 10 entries aligned with the seminar topics to ensure students are given the opportunity to obtain a deeper understanding of each topic.

Subject to the university regulations for taught programmes, unsuccessful students may be offered an opportunity for reassessment. This will comprise a task of the same format as the original assessment.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The assessment methods listed in this unit specification are designed to enable students to demonstrate the named learning outcomes (LOs). Where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, schools will make reasonable adjustments to support a student to demonstrate the LO by an alternative method or with additional resources.

The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
