Unit Information

The unit will support students to become fully conversant with the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct. This will be achieved through reflecting on the professional responsibilities set out in the code and applying these to real life scenarios in clinical placement. Content within the unit links directly to many of the RCVS Day One Competences and Professional behaviours and attitudes.

To complete this unit you will need to pass the associated assessment. This unit is required alongside other Year 3 units to allow progression to Year 4 of the Programme. There will be study days and support provided for completion of this unit.

Your learning on this unit

This unit will foster the development of reflective and proactive practitioners, capable of taking responsibility for their own professional growth and development whilst embracing the concept of lifelong learning. Students will build on the knowledge and understanding gained in the first and second year of the programme regarding the legal and ethical frameworks that govern the clinical work of veterinary nursing professionals. Students will be provided with critical reflection frameworks enabling them to examine and evaluate their own performance in the work place and having a work- life balance using a reflective approach to practice.

Students will

  • Build upon knowledge gained within Years 1 and 2 and use this knowledge to refine their skills as a reflective practitioner using an evidence based approach
  • Develop strategies and confidence with managing clinical governance in clinical settings
  • Appreciate the challenges and strategies to maintaining professional relationships within workplace settings

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this Unit, veterinary nursing students should be able to

  1. Apply legal and ethical frameworks to professional practice
  2. Critically analyse the importance of professional and personal development, reflection and accountability.
  3. Apply principles of clinical governance

How you will learn

Students will learn through:

Online synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning

Small group working

Use of Virtual learning environment (Blackboard)

Assessment drop in sessions will also be available to students.

How you will be assessed

Formative Assessment

Three reflective diaries to be submitted throughout the teaching block. They will encourage reflection on set aspects of clinical practice which can be used for the summative assessment.

Summative Assessment

Critical incident report (100%). This assessment allows students to build upon their reflective writing skills that they have previously used as well as using their new knowledge on reflective models and clinical governance to reflect on an incident within their clinical environment.

An alternative reassessment opportunity will be given, if applicable in the University resit period. Students will have the opportunity to sit an alternative piece of work, similar, but not identical to the original piece.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. VETS20025).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the University Workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The assessment methods listed in this unit specification are designed to enable students to demonstrate the named learning outcomes (LOs). Where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, schools will make reasonable adjustments to support a student to demonstrate the LO by an alternative method or with additional resources.

The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
