Unit Information

Why is this unit important?
This unit will provide you with the opportunity to implement your interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in a real-world context. Through a placement with an Aerosol Science CDT industrial, academic or third-sector partner, you will be able to develop your personal impact in a professional context, supporting your career development through career-focussed experiential learning.

How does this unit fit into your programme of study
This unit builds on all the core units delivered during Year 1 of the Aerosol Science CDT training programme, requiring integration of all the programme intended learning outcomes. The unit provides you with the opportunity to translate the skills and knowledge you have developed into a new professional context, broadening your expertise and increasing your career mobility.

Your learning on this unit

An overview of content

The unit comprises a short placement (6 – 12 weeks) with an industrial, academic, or third-sector partner. You will carry out duties relevant to your placement Partner under the supervision of a member of their staff and a member of staff of the Aerosol Science CDT. You will also complete a semi-structured reflective diary during your placement to evidence your personal development.

How will students, personally, be different as a result of the unit

Completing the Work-Integrated Learning Placement will give you detailed knowledge and experience of aerosol science in a different disciplinary context, broadening your professional skills and expertise. By communicating clearly and building effective relationships with different stakeholders, you will support delivery of a Partner project goal. Through being intentional with your actions and reflecting on your experiences during the placement, you will demonstrate the ability to manage your own personal and professional development.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the unit a successful student will be able to:
1. Identify ways in which aerosol science knowledge and understanding in a new industrial, academic or third-sector context.
2. Analyse and interpret data and solve problems creatively in aerosol science and wider contexts.
3. Build effective working relationships in a professional context , maintaining ethical standards.
4. Appraise their own personal intellectual development as a self-critical, reflective scientist, able to clearly reflect on the development of their skills and values.

How you will learn

Instruction will be provided ‘on the job’ by members of staff at your placement Partner. Through a semi-structured reflective diary, you will be supported to reflect on your experiences during your placement and the learning that you have taken from them. By making regular diary entries you will be able to track, evidence and monitor your development over time, being intentional in the skills and knowledge you want to develop and implement.

How you will be assessed

Tasks which help you learn and prepare you for summative tasks (formative)
Before beginning your placement, you will attend an induction event where the work-integrated learning framework will be explained and the format of the reflective diary to be completed during your placement will be introduced. The diary will be semi-structured and will include reflection and writing prompts to help you in its completion. You will be given the opportunity to submit a selection of diary entries for formative assessment during your placement, allowing you to receive feedback prior to your final summative submission.

Tasks which count towards your unit mark (summative)
At the end of your Work-Integrated Learning Placement you will submit a semi-structured reflective diary for assessment (100% unit mark).

When assessment does not go to plan
If you are unable to submit your reflective diary by the deadline because of exceptional circumstances, you will be granted a limited extension. In the case of academic failure, opportunities to re-sit will be according to University of Bristol regulations. Re-assessment will take the form of an interview with two CDT academics who will probe your achievement of the unit intended learning outcomes.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. CHEMD0001).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the University Workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The assessment methods listed in this unit specification are designed to enable students to demonstrate the named learning outcomes (LOs). Where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, schools will make reasonable adjustments to support a student to demonstrate the LO by an alternative method or with additional resources.

The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
